JYOTISH - Vedic Astrology

Jyotish
(literally, 'Light'; by extension, 'the Study of Light') is India's system of divination. Sometimes referred to, especially outside India, as Hindu or Vedic astrology, Jyotish is a model of reality which interprets the observed conditions of the cosmos at the time of an event in order to provide insight into the nature of the event. It is an ancient and complex method of exploring the nature of time and space deals along with the subtle astral light patterns which inform and sustain our physical being and determines our destiny in life.

Astrology has been regarded all over the world as the foremost of the occult sciences. It is the primary Vedanga or limb of the Vedas, as through it the right timing of actions. It is called the science of reason or causes "Hetu Shastra" as through it we can discern the karmic patterns behind events. Another name for it is "Jyotish", the science of light, as it deals with the subtle astral light patterns which inform and sustain our physical being and determine our destiny in life.
Vedic Astrology is "sidereal" in nature; that is, it is based upon the actual observable constellations for its delineations of the signs of the zodiac. Most Western astrology is "tropical" in nature. It does not use the actual fixed stars but bases its signs upon the point of the equinox, which is slowly but constantly changing in the heavens. It should be noted that there is a Western form of sidereal astrology and that Edgar Cayce often recommended this approach. Tibetan astrology is also based upon the Vedic sidereal model.

Vedic astrology judges individuals not so much by their Sun or any other sign but according to their predominant planet. Usually it considers the Ascendant or rising sign to be the most important factor, then the Moon and third the Sun. The Ascendant represents the physical body and material incarnation; the Moon the mind and emotional nature; the Sun the self or soul and rationality. The predominant planet is usually that which most influences the Ascendant, Moon, Sun or their lords.
Like any other science, astrology has its technology. the purpose of astrology is not only to give us a broader knowledge of ourselves; it is also to provide us with the tools to access the deeper aspects of our nature and to better deal with the forces of our subtle environment. This astrological technology consists of methods to harness our energies to improve our relationship with the cosmos. It improves various factors from nature, like gems, mantras, deities and rituals, but according to a spiritual and occult view. A Vedic astrologer is as much concerned with helping clients balance their planetary influences as with informing them as to what these influences may be. Vedic astrologers help us to better relate with and transform our karma. Vedic astrology is not a science of fate and doom but a system for alleviating suffering and warding off negative influences.
Vedic astrology represents the oldest, most consistent and most continually used system of astrology in the world. It was established and handed down through a series of enlightened sages including by many great yogis up to the present. Shri Yukteswar, guru of Paramahansa Yogananda was one such great yogic astrologer.
